Instruction for the Access on SoFS under Windows 7 via CIFS

Permanent connection as a network drive

Screenshot: Windows 7 Superbar mit Explorer-Symbol
  • Open the Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
For this purpose click on the yellow folder symbol in the taskbar, which is next to the start button (in the sreenshot it is marked with the red arrow).

Tip: You can also press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + E.

  • In the Explorer window, click on "Computer" in the left hand side pane. Then choose the entry "map network drive" in the top bar (see the arrow in the adjacent screenshot). When the Explorer window is rather narrow, the above mentioned entry will not be displayed. In this case, you can either drag the window wider or click on the button with the two small right-facing arrows at the top bar and select "choose network drive".
  • Another way to open the required dialog window (not shown in the screenshot) is to right-click on the "Computer" icon in the left hand side pane and click on "map network drive" there.

Tip: You can also briefly press the "Alt" key on the keyboard. Then a menu bar appears (File — Edit — View — Tools) and you can select the item "Map network drive" from the "Tools" menu. This way, you don't have to click on "computer" first to get the entry "map network drive" in the top bar.

In this example, the network drive "Z" and the account-name "mmuster1" are used

  • Choose a drive letter from the list (for example "S" like SoFS). In the field "folder", fill in the path to the desired share. These are:

    • For "private" shares:
    • For "public" shares
      \\\public\[first letter of the account-name]\[account-name]
    • For "projects" shares

  • Remember to replace the components used here in squere brackets with the information applicable in your case.
  • For example: \\\jdoe or \\\public\e\eexample
  • Make sure that you use a backslash for the path specification (with german keyboard layout: AltGr + ß; with US keyboard layout: above the enter key). It  will not work with a forwardslash (Shift + 7 with German keyboard layout, next to the right shift key, along with the questionmark, on US keyboard layout).

Tip: You can also specify the name of a subfolder if you access on these frequently.

Examples:  \\\mmuster2\Example or \\\projects\sample-projects\finances

  • The option "restore connection at login" is recommended to use only on stationary PCs, they are located on the campus of the university. Laptops, which are not permanently connected to the university network, would have problems with delayed logins after a restart if you chose this option.
  • It may take a moment until the connection is established. Please be patient.
  • Enter the username (with the prefix "AD\") and password of your student or employee account in the login window.
    Example: AD\jdoe
  • Make sure that you use a backslash (on German keyboard: AltGr+ß; with US keyboard layout: to the right of the bracket keys, above the enter key)
  • It depends on your desired level of security wheter you should check the box to save your login data or not.
  • If the password is wrong, you will be prompted to enter it again. Check also if the displayed username is correct.
  • If you use a computer that is part of the AD domain, no login-window of this type will appear. You will be automatically logged into SoFS with the data you use to login to your computer.
The connection to the network drive can also be disconnected again.
  • The connected network drive is now displayed. You can also, as usual, create files and folders, move files and open documents via double clicking.
  • If you want to cancel the connection to the network drive, just click with the right mouse button on the connected drive and select Disconnect in the context menu.

Tip: On mobile devices, where are the automatic reconnection at the login is not recommended, you can put a shortcut on the desktop instead and access in this way directly to elements stored in the SoFS.

For example: To establish a shortcut with a subfolder (which is stored in SoFS), press the Alt-key on the keyboard and keep it pressed while you drag the folder from the Explorer window with the mouse to the desktop. (When you release the mouse button, it can be that you receive a security warning from Windows. Simply confirm with "OK".)

After a restart, you can double-click on this shortcut and just have to enter user name and password (if necessary)-the connection to the network drive is restored directly.

Spontaneous Connection

Often, it is not worthwhile to define an extra connection as a network drive for rarely used areas in SoFS. You can also access areas in SoFS  spontaneously by typing the network address directly in the Explorer window.

  • Screenshot: Eingabe einer Netzwerkadresse direkt in die Adressezeile. Großansicht:
Network addresses can be entered directly into the address bar of Windows Explorer (in the end, press the return key).
  • Screenshot: Passworteingabe Großansicht:
Please note at the login : Use the addition "AD\" before the username-like in this example
  • Click with the mouse on the address bar in an open window of the Windows Explorer (not the Internet Explorer). Enter the network address of the desired network share.

  • In the adjacent picture given as an example here, the address bar is marked with a red arrow.  \\\mmuster2 has already been typed in as a network address. For your own connections, enter an address using the pattern described before and make sure that you enter the backslash correctly (AltGr+ß with German keyboard layout, above the Enter key with US keyboard layout). At the end, press the enter key.
  • It may take some time until the connection to the server is established. Please be patient.

  • On computers that are not part of the AD domain, a login window will appear. Please enter the username of your student account or employee account with the prefix "AD\"
and the corresponding password. Also pay attention to the spelling with backslash (AltGr + ß with German keyboard layout, above the Enter key with US keyboard layout)

  • If you have already established a connection to another share on the same SoFS server, no login window will appear. Instead, you will be logged into the server using the data entered previously.

  • If you have various accounts, please note that Windows can only connect to a specific file server with one account name at the same time. So you cannot log into SoFS with two different account names simultaneously.

  • After the connection has been established, the contents of the SoFS directory will be displayed in the Explorer window.
