3D-Printing
Details
Please fill in the application form first.
Any questions you may have will be answered here.
If you have any questions, please contact the 3D-Laboratory for advance planning.
Employees and students of the University of Cologne can havean object made by our 3D printer. Employees can also print collections of more than 10 objects in one pass.

Prerequisites for printing
In order to order a 3D print, we need a cost center of the institute, institution or department from employees. These are used to transfer the material costs of the print internally.
Students must pay the costs via a corresponding cost centre, e. g. their own faculty. Students may also use the servicesof the 3D laboratory for university purposes only. A person responsible for thecost centre must confirmthis.. A person responsible for the cost centre must confirm this.

Model
The printer is the Objet30 model from Stratasys. It is a polyjet printer that prints fine layers of liquid resin and then cures them with UV light. A single layer has a thickness of 16-36µm and the accuracy of the process is 0.1mm in relation to the underlying file.
What can be printed
Only STL files can be read and processed by the printer. However, conversion to this format is made possible by most 3D modeling programs. Furthermore, the file must be 'waterproof'. This means: The triangular grid, which describes the surface of the object, must be closed. Otherwise, errors may occur during printing.
The installation space of the printer is given in length x width x height by 294 x 192 x 148.6 mm. Therefore, this is also the size limitation of the printable objects. If models consist of moving parts such as joints, these can be printed in one pass. A prerequisite for good mobility of the object, however, is a distance of at least 0.1 mm between the individual parts.
Since the printer works with liquid resin, no negative gradient can be printed without supporting material being printed underneath. This backing material can be removed after printing. However, if there are cavities in the model that are difficult to reach and are closed at the top, it may not be possible to remove the support material from them.
Transfer of the file
You can bring the file by USB stick or CD. Please contact the RRZK-Helpdesk to make an appointment. However, the preliminary calculation of the costs can only be done with the file. For a digital data transfer please use:
E-Mail, up to file size 50MB
GigaMove, up to a file size of 2GB
sciebo
What you get
When the object is printed, the support material is removed in a washing station with a high-pressure cleaner. The last traces of the support material are then removed in a caustic soda bath. If you want to clean the object yourself, please note it on the form.
