Opencast (Matterhorn) is a university-wide automated service for recording, editing and publishing lectures. In the lecture halls which have already been equipped, there is an easy and effective way of recording lectures or events, editing the recordings and publishing the content for students in their ILIAS courses. No camera crew, additional computers or microphones are required. Opencast is particularly suitable for non-interactive lectures (instructor-centred rather than discursive). The same technology can also be used for other events such as conferences or lecture series.
According to statistics and research conducted at institutions who have been using this technology for some time, this is seen as added value rather than a replacement for teaching presence.
After you have given your consent and commissioned our services, we will set up the recording date in our system. The recording will start 5 minutes before and last until 10 minutes after the event. The audio and projector signal will be recorded. If a camera is installed in the lecture hall, the lecturer may also be recorded if they give their consent.
The raw material will be edited on our servers. This includes encoding in standard video formats, automatic extraction of slides for slide preview, text extraction and text recognition.
The edited recordings can be published for students to stream via the player in ILIAS. Published content is only available to the students registered for the event or course. Students can preview the slides alongside the video stream, customize the layout and search for keywords in the recording. Content cannot be downloaded. If required, content can be made publicly available or published on the institute's website.

Good reasons for recording lectures
Recordings should not replace presence lectures but complement them:
Reason 1: Little effort required and secure
You will need to be in a lecture hall which has the necessary equipment to record lectures. After we have prepared the system, the recording will start automatically shortly before your lecture or event begins.
All you need to do is get in touch with us via the contact form for recording lectures . Use the microphones provided for recording audio. You only need your digital presentation. No other software is required.
The recordings can only be streamed via ILIAS to students registered for the course or event. Your content cannot be downloaded.
Reason 2: E-learning is part of a modern learning experience and increasingly expected from students.
There are many reasons why students or lecturers cannot attend a lecture. If lectures are related, it is often difficult to catch up on the learning material. Recordings can be used to prepare and deliver learning content. Overfilled lecture halls which do not meet fire regulations can be avoided.
Reason 3: Content can be revised or skipped based on the student's knowledge of the material.
Students attending a lecture often have varying knowledge of the material and some may find the lecture more difficult to follow than others. Recordings can be paused to repeat sections which may not have been understood or to look something up.
This function cannot replace presence lectures, as this process is not interactive. However, it can help students to learn together and demonstrably improve learning outcomes. Students who use recordings as an alternative to visiting lectures have often achieved poorer examination results.
