Huamanities and Social Sciences

KA³ - Digital Humanities

In the humanities and social sciences, multimodal data are becoming ever more important. The evaluation, documentation, publication and archiving are technologies which have not yet been fully explored in the context of the humanities and social sciences, since a considerable use of transcriptions is still primary medium for representing these data.

The KA³ project is implementing a cross-site and cross-discipline Cologne center for the analysis and archiving of audiovisual data. Its focus will be set on the interaction-oriented structuring and efficient provision of audiovisual data.

In the KA³ project, the RRZK will participate in the development and expansion of a supra-regional online archive and will contribute its own experience in the areas of software development, sustainability and operation. The performance and future-proof design is an important goal in the project. Supporting users in all their application scenarios is a central requirement, which is guaranteed by the agile approach of the sofwaredevelopment.

Mathematics and Natural Sciences

The Cancer Systems Biology Database (CancerSysDB)

The Cancer Systems Biology Database (CancerSysDB) project aims to develop a database for integrative data analysis of molecular cancer datasets. Here, data integration is meant to be cross-data type, cross-cancer type as well as cross-study integration of the data. It will be available as a public instance containing published data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and also as a downloadable software which enables scientists to link a private instance of the CancerSysDB to their own cancer genomics pipelines and thus set up their local infrastructure for data organisation and integrative analysis. This will finally speed up the computational procedures in clinical cancer research and open scientists enhanced perspectives on their data.

High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Advancing Climate Prediction HD(CP)2

The project 'High definition clouds and precipitation for advancing climate prediction' - HD(CP)² is a research initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to improve our understanding of atmospheric processes such as humidity and cloud formation.

Using a wide range of high quality observation data and new developed high-resolution simulations a more precise climate prediction should be possible. The observation and simulation domain of HD(CP)² is concentrated on Germany and the Netherlands.

An important goal for the HD(CP)² module Integration is the organization of these observation data in a public accessible data archive. Establishing the technical infrastructure and developing service tools for metadata editing, quality checking and statistical analysis is the contribution of the Regional Computing Centre in Cologne.

Erlassdatenbank der Universität zu Köln

Die Verteilung von an die Universität zu Köln adressierten Erlassen verschiedener staatlicher Stellen ist eine große (verwaltungs-)logistische Herausforderung. Zumeist müssen mehreren Dezernaten, Fakultäten und weitere Stellen komplexe Informationen zugänglich gemacht werden. Gleichzeitig müssen interne und externe Fristen organisiert und gehalten werden.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Diensteentwicklung des RRZK entwickelt zu diesem Zweck die Abteilung 34 (Innerer Dienst und Beihilfeservice) ein neues Werkzeug für das Erlassmanagement. Die so entstehende Erlassdatenbank (Erlassbuch) verwaltet zur Zeit schon über 10.000 Erlasse in digitaler Form, die zurück bis in das Jahr 1998 reichen und aus einem schon bestehenden Datenbestand migriert wurden. Sie stellt die effiziente Informationsweitergabe an federführende, beteiligte und zu informierende Stellen innerhalb der Universität sicher. Ein differenziertes Rollen- und Berechtigungskonzept mittels Zugriffssteuerungslisten (Access Control Lists) stellt die Vertraulichkeit der zu zirkulierenden Informationen sicher. Alle Erlasse werden dauerhaft archiviert und zu Recherchezwecken durchsuchbar gemacht. Die Erlasse können nach verschiedensten Kriterien (auch in Kombination) gezielt gefiltert werden, so dass eine eingeschränkte Suche, zum Beispiel nach Absender, Zeitraum, Aktenzeichen oder Stichwort möglich ist.
