High Performance Computing (HPC)

ORKA-HPC - OpenMP for reconfigurable heterogenous architectures

The ORKA-HPC project deals with heterogeneous HPC architectures using FPGA accelerators. The reconfigurable nature of FPGAs enables highly efficient implementations of selected algorithmic kernels of heterogeneous application classes. As programming FPGAs is a highly specialised area and very time-consuming, they are rarely used in current HPC applications. Recent developments address better coupling between the FPGA subsystem and host. ORKA-HPC intends to make FPGAs accessible to software developers in the HPC domain and to significantly reduce the effort of porting software to FPGAs.
This includes utilizing FGPAs productively via OpenMP, which has proven to be the most strongly adapted shared memory programming model to date. Previous OpenMP implementation attempts have focused on specific aspects and do not address the performance aspects relevant in the HPC field. For an integrated approach, research into new ways of representing program code and heuristic methods for optimizing inherently parallel architectures is required.

Huamanities and Social Sciences

KA³ - Digital Humanities

In the humanities and social sciences, multimodal data are becoming ever more important. The evaluation, documentation, publication and archiving are technologies which have not yet been fully explored in the context of the humanities and social sciences, since a considerable use of transcriptions is still primary medium for representing these data.

The KA³ project is implementing a cross-site and cross-discipline Cologne center for the analysis and archiving of audiovisual data. Its focus will be set on the interaction-oriented structuring and efficient provision of audiovisual data.

In the KA³ project, the RRZK will participate in the development and expansion of a supra-regional online archive and will contribute its own experience in the areas of software development, sustainability and operation. The performance and future-proof design is an important goal in the project. Supporting users in all their application scenarios is a central requirement, which is guaranteed by the agile approach of the sofwaredevelopment.

High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Advancing Climate Prediction HD(CP)2

The project 'High definition clouds and precipitation for advancing climate prediction' - HD(CP)² is a research initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to improve our understanding of atmospheric processes such as humidity and cloud formation.

Using a wide range of high quality observation data and new developed high-resolution simulations a more precise climate prediction should be possible. The observation and simulation domain of HD(CP)² is concentrated on Germany and the Netherlands.

An important goal for the HD(CP)² module Integration is the organization of these observation data in a public accessible data archive. Establishing the technical infrastructure and developing service tools for metadata editing, quality checking and statistical analysis is the contribution of the Regional Computing Centre in Cologne.
