Streaming with Airplay to an AppleTV via eduroam

A new feature was added to the AppleTV software version 6.1 and iOS 7.1 and above: Airplay discovery via Bluetooth. This makes it easier for an AppleTV and AirPlay clients to connect when they are not in the same subnet. This is the case if an iPhone/iPad/iPod is connected to the University of Cologne Wi-Fi network but the AppleTV is connected to the institute network.

Instructions

To connect an AppleTV to the network via cable, you will need to register it in the institute network:

  1. Open the form for requesting an IP address.
  2. Ensure that you state that the device is an AppleTV to ensure that the firewall rules are configured properly.
  3. You will need the MAC address of the device. When you follow the instructions for finding the MAC address, please make sure that your Apple TV is connected to the network via a cable.
  4. Submit the form.

Important: To use Airplay, you will need to establish a VPN connection. Guide to configuring the VPN in iOS.

If you have forgotten to start the VPN connection, you will see the AppleTV but you won't be able to stream any content. We recommend that display a notice at the institute to remind users to establish a VPN connection to the AppleTV.
