Seminar recordings and hybrid lectures

With the automated recording system, lectures can currently be recorded and made available as a livestream in the larger lecture halls. While the technical expansion of the usable rooms at the UzK is progressing, recordings and hybrid events can also be carried out with relatively simple equipment.

Recording your course with mobile technology
You want to make your lecture available online? We offer you technical support in the form of a basic recording set, which we can provide in limited numbers for seminar rooms/lecture halls that are not yet equipped with the necessary technology. The sets can be rented for one-time use or, for the entire semester if you want to record all your sessions. Please refer to the lending section linked here for more information.

Important: Always inform students about recordings or live broadcasts. Avoid filming students without their explicit consent at all times.

Basic scenarios

Recording

  • Setting: Simple recording of a seminar with prioritisation of audio and a presentations or audio and the image of your webcam (under controlled conditions or on location).
  • Hardware and software requirements:
    • Laptop with integrated webcam
    • You can use Zoom for local recording  (short instructions for recording with Zoom (PDF, 844 kB, german); alternative video conferencing tools are of course also suitable, for example DFNconf.
    • Local recording with Opencast Studio directly in your ILIAS course (while recording you would have to be logged into your ILIAS course). Under this link you will find a short video on how to use Opencast Studio in ILIAS.
    • Alternative recording with a smartphone. If you have a more up to date smartphone, you can use it for recording lectures. However, in this scenario you would have to go without a presentation or presenting files if you do not want to or cannot perform any post-processing.
  • Possibilities for expansion:
    • External webcam to increase your flexibility. A good webcam for example also offers the possibility of using a blackboard on site. 
    • External microphone to improve the clarity of your voice and increase your flexibility.
  • Recommendations:
    • In general: You should ask yourself how important it is that you can be seen in the recording. Often it is enough that your voice can be heard and that you can show files or a presentation at the same time.
    • Technology: Webcams such as Logitech Brio *,  Razer Kiyo * or OBSBOT Tiny AI * are conveniently connected via USB and offer you greater flexibility; You can significantly improve the quality of your voice recording with USB-based microphones such as Razer Seiren Mini *,  Tonor Conference Microphone USB * and the wireless microphone RODE Wireless GO II *, which allows you to move freely around in a room.
      For smartphone recording: Mini Tripod * for optimal positioning; OBSBOT Me * intelligent tripod that can track your movements.

Hybrid lectures

  • Setting: Simultaneous presentation of seminar content in a video conferencing tool with the possibility of digital interaction.
  • Hardware and software requirements:
    • Laptop with integrated webcam
    • Zoom or alternative videoconferencing tools such as DFNconf
  • Possibilities for expansion:
    • The same options are available as for recording (see above). 
    • Simultaneous recording can be realised in the videoconferencing tools.
    • If external participants are involved, the sound system on site should be used if possible or an external speaker such as the Anker SoundCore 2 *, so that the plenum can also understand them well. It can also be particularly helpful to use a speakerphone solution such as Jabra Speak 510 or Jabra Speak 710 as these combine microphone and speaker in one device.
  • Recommendations:
    • In general: Prepare your events accordingly by creating and saving a meeting based on your needs.
    • Technology: See recommendations in the Recording section above.

In the case of using additional devices consider the amount of USB ports needed or the need for adapters in the case of very compact laptops and MacBooks.

Advanced Scenarios

Recording

  • Setting: Recording of a seminar as optimised as possible to your conditions (at home or on site).
  • Hardware and software requirements:
    • Laptop with integrated webcam or a desktop computer.
    • Zoom (if two cameras are needed) or alternative video conferencing tools such as DFNconf.
    • OBS Studio Software for local recording with multiple audio and video sources.
    • Opencast Studio for local recording directly in your ILIAS course.
  • Possibilities for expansion:
    • External webcams for more flexibility and mobility.
    • External microphone for higher quality respectively external wireless microphone for maximum mobility on site.
  • Recommendations:

Hybrid lectures

  • Setting: Simultaneous presentation of seminar content in a video conferencing tool with the possibility of digital interaction, even in larger rooms.
  • Hardware and software requirements:
    • Laptop
    • Zoom or alternative video conferencing tools such as DFNconf.
    • As the size of the room increases, the demands on the audiovisual performance of the devices used also increase. Even for such purposes, setups consisting of individual devices can be combined (you can find an example under this link in the section "Tier 4 – Very good quality and flexibility even for larger rooms"), but dedicated video conferencing devices are recommended here. They usually only have a single USB connection to the computer and can be purchased with additional expansion microphones.
  • Recommendations: All-in-one devices with USB connection and additional microphones

In the case of using additional devices consider the amount of USB ports needed or the need for adapters in the case of very compact laptops and MacBooks.
