Webmail
You can read you university's accounts e-mail messages using the Webmail service in a browser. In Webmail, you can manage your e-mails, organize your calendar, your assignments and notes from any computer with all common browsers. This is an alternative to locally installed e-mail programs, e.g. Thunderbird or Outlook.
Mailportal
You can change the basic settings for your email account in the "Mailportal". For example forwarding e-mails and out-of-office messages.
Encrypting and signing e-mails via S/MIME
S/MIME (Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard tool to encrypt and sign e-mails. Certificates for the use of S/MIME can be requested by regular employees of the University of Cologne at the RRZK. (Not available for students or student assistants). The use of certificates is not possible under Webmail.
Mailinglists
A mailinglist is a summary of e-mail addresses. If you send an e-mail to this list address, it will be distributed automatically to all members of that list. You can also use a mailinglist to provide a non-personal contact-address for a team or a project.
E-Mail alias
An e-mail alias is a synonym in the first part of an e-mail address in order to identify the user (to the left of the "@" sign). This allows you to set up a "prettier" or address as an alias next to your default account address.

Virtual mail-domain
In addition to the mail addresses of the form @uni-koeln.de, further addresses of the form @INSTITUT.uni-koeln.de can be assigned to users with personal or guest accounts via the central mail server.
