No WLAN symbol is displayed

  • Check whether the WLAN connection is switched off ...
    • ... using the switch on the notebook
      Many notebooks have a button that must be pressed before the WLAN connection is active. On other notebooks, the WLAN connection is switched on and off using a slide switch. Another common method is to switch the WLAN module on and off using a special key combination. Look for a key on the keyboard with a symbol for the wireless network, which usually has to be pressed together with the Fn key. As a rule, there is a small light which indicates that the WLAN module is ready for operation.
    • ... by deactivating the network connection
      It is possible to completely deactivate the wireless network connection under Windows. Open the "Network and Sharing Center" (if necessary, type the first few letters in the search field of the Start menu) and click on "Manage network connections" or "Change adapter settings".
    • ... through advanced settings of the network adapter
      Depending on the WLAN adapter, you can also switch off the transmission function of the WLAN adapter in the advanced settings via the device manager, for example by selecting items such as "Wireless off" or "Radio off" or by selecting an unsuitable radio mode (such as: 802.11-n-only or 802.11-a-only). However, these settings are predefined by default and only need to be changed if you have actively changed such settings in the past.
    • Download and install the WLAN adapter driver.

The eduroam network does not appear, so I cannot connect?

  • Check the energy-saving settings of the device or check whether connecting to a mains cable improves the signal strength of your own device.
  • Change the location within a building or change the building

I get a security message from Windows when I try to connect to the WLAN, asking for my user name and password?

1st possible solution:

Restart the device once by clicking on the "Shutdown" button while holding down the Shift key. Then restart the device and check whether the connection to eduroam is now working.

Delete the old login data via Secure W2 by clicking on "Settings" at the top left and then on "Fix problem"->"Delete old login data". Alternatively, you can also remove the profile in the WLAN settings in Windows. Then set up eduroam again according to our instructions.

No network connection to eduroam is established. The network connection fails.

  • Deactivate the WLAN once and activate it again. Then try to establish a connection to eduroam again.
  • Check the date settings on your computer. If the date set on your computer is grossly incorrect (e.g. wrong year), a connection may not be established because the validity period of the certificate (to secure communication with the login server) is incorrectly assumed to be invalid. Double-click on the time in the taskbar (bottom right) to check the date and time settings and correct them if necessary.
  • Restart the computer. Under certain circumstances, Windows does not ask for the login data for the WLAN. This can often be rectified by restarting the computer.
  • Change the location. Especially within the university library, it can happen that stable WLAN reception is not possible at certain locations. Therefore, if possible, move to a different location. Logically, WLAN reception is best in the immediate vicinity of the access points.
  • Reset the network settings once and then try to configure the WLAN again.

After some time, the connection breaks off and no more data is transferred!

  • Energy-saving settings too restrictive: If a laptop is running on battery power, the energy-saving options set too aggressively in Windows can cause the Wi-Fi connection to drop out after a while, even with good reception. To prevent this, open the "Energy options" (simply type in the start menu) and edit the settings for "Energy saving mode". Select the "Advanced settings". In the "Wireless adapter settings", it is better not to select the maximum, but only the "Medium energy-saving mode" for battery operation. You can also change the power status by clicking on the battery icon at the bottom of the taskbar. Check whether setting the slider to maximum power solves the problem.
  • Change location: If it is not due to the aforementioned energy-saving settings, unfortunately the only option is to move to another location with better reception conditions. Updating the driver/firmware of the WLAN adapter may also bring an improvement.

If you are still unable to establish a connection and none of the above advice has helped (or you are not clear what exactly is meant by the individual explanations), take your notebook to the ITCC helpdesk. It is best to call in advance and ask for an appointment for advice.
