Instructions for accessing SoFS under Windows 10 via CIFS/SMB

Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start icon and selecting Explorer. Tip: Alternatively, you can also press Windows key+E on the keyboard to open Explorer.
Left-click on “This PC” and select the option “Connect network drive”.
Under “Folder”, enter the path of the SoFS drive to which you want to connect. The drive letter is freely selectable. Activate the option “Connect with other credentials” and then click on “Finish”. The “Enter network login information” window then opens. If necessary, activate the option “Use another account” and enter your user data in the form “ad\[account name]” with the corresponding password.

A connection to the UKLAN (via eduroam, LAN or VPN) is required to connect to a SoFS drive in this way.

  1. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start icon and selecting Explorer. Tip: Alternatively, you can also press Windows key+E on the keyboard to open Explorer.
  2. Left-click on “This PC” and select the option “Connect network drive”.
  3. Under “Folder”, enter the path of the SoFS drive to which you want to connect. The drive letter is freely selectable. a user's private drive is located at
    1. \\sofs1.uni-koeln.de\[account name]
    2. The public drive of a user is located at \\sofs1.uni-koeln.de\public\[initial letter of the account name]\[account name]
    3. You can obtain paths for institute drives from your institution (usually \\sofs2.uni-koeln.de\[name])
  4. Activate the option “Connect with other credentials” and then click on “Finish”. The “Enter network login information” window then opens. If necessary, activate the option “Use another account” and enter your user data in the form “ad\[account name]” with the corresponding password.
  5. Then click on OK. You will now find the drive under the drive letter you selected.
