SoFS access for Linux/Ubuntu

Access is mainly via the Windows network protocol CIFS. This is supported under Linux via the Samba network software otherwise known as the smb protocol. However, this does not offer "secure", i.e. encrypted, transmission and requires a VPN connection outside of the UKLAN (for example at home). This is currently only offered by WebDAV.

As an example, here is a guide to the SoFS drive via Ubuntu. Please note that depending on the Linux distribution or Ubuntu version, the steps may change.

Setting up access via CIFS/SMB

A new window will open. Click on "registered user" under "Connected as". Enter your user name under "Username" and "ad" under "Domain". Below that, enter your personal password for the account. Click on "Connect" in the upper right corner to connect to SoFS.

1. To set up SoFS on your Ubuntu, make sure you are on the UKLAN, i.e., connected to the University of Cologne network either via eduroam, VPN, or the Ethernet connection.

2. Open the file manager in Ubuntu and click on "Other Locations".

In the bottom bar ("Connect to Server"), you can enter a network path. Enter the corresponding SoFS path there:

  • personal private area: smb://sofs1.uni-koeln.de/private/[username].
  • personal public area: smb://sofs1.uni-koeln.de/public/[initial of account name]/[account name]
  • For institutions: smb://sofs2.uni-koeln.de/projects/[path to the institution's SoFS area] | smb://sofs.uni-koeln.de/[path to the institution's SoFS area].

3. Now a new window opens. Click on "registered user" at "Connected as". Enter your user name under "Username" and "ad" under "Domain". Below that, enter your personal password for the account. Click on "Connect" in the upper right corner to connect to SoFS.
