Creating a WLAN profile (mobileconfig)
To register iPads manually with the Apple Configurator 2 at the Apple School Manager, it is mandatory to create a WLAN profile (.mobileconfig) and to transfer it to the iPad during the registration process. You can find out where and how to do this in the registration instructions .
Without this WLAN profile the iPad cannot connect to the internet and a registration will fail.
Open Apple Configurator and create a new profile
- On your macOs device, open the Apple Configurator 2.
- Then select File - Create new profile from the menu bar.
Name profile and configure WLAN
- In the Configurator, under General, you must give the profile a name.
- Optionally, you can also set a description and organization.
- Then switch to the WLAN item in the sidebar and click on Configure.
Create WLAN settings
- now create the settings for the WLAN network itself.
- Enter the network name (SSID).
- Select the type of network: usually personal WPA/WPA2 for home networks or hotspots.
- Enter the corresponding password.
Important note about the Uni-Network
Attention. An initial registration fails with the eduroam WLAN. Apple prevents the Apple Configurator 2 Enterprise networks (such as eduroam) for managed devices to configure via mobileconfig files. By registering to Apple School Manager the devices become so called "managed devices" - that's what should be achieved. So it is unfortunately necessary for the first registration to create either a home network or a hotsport e.g. via cell phone. Hotspot data over cell phone can be read out exemplarily e.g. in such a way and configured likewise by means of .mobileconfig files. For the iPhone under Settings - Personal Hotspot.
